“UK Proposes Faster EU Rule Alignment, Causing Parliamentary Debate”

Date:

Keir Starmer has supported proposals to enable the UK to align with European Union regulations without requiring a vote from Members of Parliament on each regulation change.

As part of the government’s efforts to reset relations with Brussels, a new law will be introduced to expedite the adoption of single market rules if deemed beneficial for the UK. This process could be facilitated through the use of Henry VIII powers, allowing ministers to enact laws via secondary legislation without full parliamentary scrutiny.

Starmer emphasized that any legislation permitting such alignment would first need approval from MPs. He stressed the importance of strengthening ties with Europe for the UK’s benefit during an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live.

The Prime Minister expressed his belief in the necessity of a closer relationship with Europe, citing benefits in defense, security, energy, and the economy. He highlighted that the proposed legislation aims to streamline trade processes, reduce business burdens, and lower costs.

Critics raised concerns that utilizing secondary legislation for dynamic alignment with Brussels could sideline Westminster, with some labeling the plan as “outrageous.” The government has clarified its stance on not rejoining the single market, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasizing that deviations from Brussels rules should be the exception rather than the norm.

A government spokesperson reassured that the proposed bill will undergo standard parliamentary procedures, with new treaties or agreements with the EU subject to parliamentary scrutiny. The spokesperson highlighted the potential economic benefits, including a significant food and drink trade deal, job support, and reduced red tape for British industries.

While some circumstances may allow for votes on secondary legislation, the level of scrutiny differs from that of new laws. Any attempts to block changes could lead to complications with the EU and potential retaliatory measures from Brussels. Negotiations between Britain and the EU are ongoing, aiming to finalize agreements on various areas, including a youth mobility scheme, sanitary and phytosanitary regulations, and emissions trading systems alignment by an upcoming joint summit.
