“UK Shifts to Hybrid Warships in Modernization Move”

Date:

Keir Starmer has decided to opt for “hybrid” warships over replacing the Royal Navy’s aging destroyers as part of a significant move to modernize the armed forces.

The plan involves introducing at least six new Common Combat Vessels to replace the current six Type 45 destroyers, with the deployment set to begin in the early 2030s. These new warships will have the capability to coordinate unmanned systems in the air, on the surface, and underwater, especially crucial amidst increasing Russian submarine activity near vital undersea cables in the Atlantic.

In a shift away from the original strategy, the crisis-ridden Defence Investment Plan (Dip) will no longer include the construction of a new class of guided-missile warship, the Type 83 destroyer. This decision comes following heated debates over funding that led to the resignations of Defence Secretary John Healey and Armed Forces Minister Al Carns earlier this month.

The new Defence Secretary, Dan Jarvis, has managed to secure an additional £1 billion, bringing the total budget closer to £15 billion over the next four years. However, this amount falls significantly short of the reported £28 billion deemed necessary by defense officials to ensure Britain’s preparedness for war.

It is anticipated that the Prime Minister will release the Dip possibly as early as Tuesday, ahead of a critical Nato summit in early July. This publication is expected to be one of his final major acts before handing over leadership to the anticipated successor, Andy Burnham, who has reportedly approved the plans.

Speaking on the initiative, Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis emphasized the importance of providing the Royal Navy with modernized capabilities through the Common Combat Vessels. He highlighted that these hybrid ships, developed in collaboration with British innovators, will support jobs across the nation and equip the Royal Navy with assets tailored for contemporary warfare.

The strategy aligns with the vision of First Sea Admiral General Sir Gwyn Jenkins to transition towards a new “hybrid Navy,” incorporating crewed ships, submarines, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence. Under Jarvis’s direction, the Dip has been refocused on ensuring frontline troops receive essential equipment, such as allocating £500 million to equip the UK Commando Force with high-speed boats and lethal strike drones.

The investment in the elite UK Commando Force, known for its rapid deployment capabilities worldwide, will particularly target activities in the High North region, where Russian activities are escalating. Part of the funding will go towards new high-speed commando insertion craft, potentially useful in operations like seizing Russian shadow fleet vessels.

Earlier in the month, Royal Marine commandos played a pivotal role in intercepting the sanctioned vessel Smyrtos in the Channel during the UK-led operation, marking a significant event in maritime security operations.
