In just half a year, the UK will witness a significant upgrade to its communication network. Millions of additional households have been alerted to prepare for the upcoming shift. By January 2027, the long-standing copper phone system in the UK will be retired, making way for the new Digital Voice platform. This innovative service utilizes broadband connections for voice calls, replacing the century-old copper wire infrastructure.
This transition is crucial for households, as failure to switch to Digital Voice could result in the loss of traditional landline services. A recent campaign called “Don’t Put Off the Switch,” led by Clare Balding, emphasized the importance of checking and ensuring readiness for the digital era.
Although the nationwide deadline is six months away, the migration process is gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, a major broadband network operator in the UK, has issued “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. This action prohibits broadband providers, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, from offering or transitioning customers to older copper-based services in those regions.
The “Stop Sell” initiative is activated when 75% of premises connected to an exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre services. Customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or modify their broadband or phone services in these areas will need to opt for the new digital service over the Full Fibre network.
With this recent development, the total number of exchanges under the “Stop Sell” policy has reached 1,572, covering approximately 15.4 million residences and businesses nationwide. While the shift to full fibre and Digital Voice may seem daunting, it promises enhanced benefits like faster broadband speeds, more dependable connections, and a modern phone service tailored for the digital age.
