Russian military forces carried out a widespread drone assault on Ukraine overnight while the death toll from a recent shooting spree in Kyiv reached seven. Following the attack, Ukraine retaliated by targeting the Black Sea port of Tuapse, causing a significant fire at an oil facility in the Krasnodar region.
This marked Ukraine’s second strike on the Russian facility within a week, aimed at disrupting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s financial resources primarily derived from energy sales. As a result of a gunman’s rampage in a Kyiv mall over the weekend, six people were killed, and 14, including a child, were injured, with seven individuals still hospitalized.
The perpetrator, a 58-year-old Russian-born man residing in the Donetsk region, was killed by rapid response forces, with the incident classified as a terrorist attack. Kremlin troops launched attacks on various Ukrainian cities, resulting in property damage and civilian casualties, with air raid sirens sounding across many locations.
A total of 142 attack drones were deployed on Ukrainian territories, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, and Poltava. Ukrainian defenses, including air, anti-aircraft units, electronic warfare teams, and mobile fire groups, were mobilized to counter the assault.
Despite shooting down 113 Russian drones, the wreckage caused collateral damage. The Tuapse refinery, one of Russia’s top ten refineries processing up to 12 million tons of crude oil annually, was the target of the attack. In recent months, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly struck major Russian export hubs, impacting oil terminals crucial to Russia’s exports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the US decision to extend Russia’s oil sales period amid Western sanctions, emphasizing that every dollar spent on Russian oil supported the war in Ukraine. With widespread sanctions in effect since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine continues to target Russian energy facilities to weaken Putin’s financial backing for the conflict.
Putin’s forces are experiencing significant losses daily, with over 1,000 troops falling to death or injury, creating recruitment challenges for the ongoing war in Ukraine.
