“Ultimate Sourdough Taste Test: Surprising Winner Revealed”

Date:

When you switch to sourdough bread, it’s challenging to go back. The tangy flavor and chewy texture have made it a staple in my weekly shopping routine, and I’m not alone in this sentiment.

Jason’s is the go-to brand for many when it comes to sourdough. I’ve been a loyal fan for a long time, particularly of their ciabattin variety, which is perfect for toasting.

While a loaf from Jason’s typically costs between £2.15 and £2.50, I decided to compare it to four own-brand sourdough loaves from supermarkets to stretch my food budget further.

I conducted a taste test at Tesco, Aldi, Asda, and Sainsbury’s, with prices ranging from £1.75 to £2.44. I was surprised to find that the priciest loaf was one of the smallest among them.

After trying slices from each loaf alongside Jason’s ciabattin, I found a clear winner that was more affordable than the big brand. This loaf has become my regular choice due to its chewy sourdough consistency and added depth in flavor.

Although this winning loaf offers smaller portions compared to traditional sourdough, it fits perfectly in the toaster. It freezes well, but it’s not the best option for sandwiches, excelling mainly as toast.

Score: 8/10

The most expensive option I tested had only eight portions in the pack, which was a bit disappointing. While Asda’s selection is usually impressive, this sourdough lacked flavor and had an overly dense consistency, though the thick slices were tender.

Score: 7/10

On par with Tesco in terms of price, another loaf failed to resemble sourdough to my taste. It lacked the chewiness and crispness I prefer, leading me to consider trying the rye variety instead.

Score: 5/10

Despite my initial assumptions about Sainsbury’s pricing, their sourdough loaf turned out to be good value. It offered a tangy taste, soft texture, and excellent toasting quality, making it my second favorite among the tested loaves.

Score: 8/10

The undisputed winner for me was a loaf that had the right crust, depth of flavor with a touch of saltiness, and improved taste when toasted. Despite having only eight slices per pack, it was worth it, although the bread had more holes than the Jason’s brand.

Rating: 9/10

This winning loaf was priced at £1.75 with a Clubcard, but the deal has since expired. Keep an eye out for future offers on this loaf.
