“Unheard Youth: Struggling to Enter Job Market”

Date:

A young individual shared with our Review the feeling of being unheard while applying for jobs.

Despite numerous applications, there were no responses, only automated rejections. Entry-level job postings required experience that the individual had never been given the opportunity to acquire.

The desire to work, establish a routine, earn personal income, and create a future was overshadowed by closed doors without even a chance to be considered. This narrative is all too common among the youth in Britain today.

Close to one million young people in the UK are currently not engaged in education, employment, or training, accounting for one in eight individuals. Neglecting the potential of nearly a million young talents can hinder a country’s progress, leading to labor shortages, sluggish growth, and increased welfare costs.

This situation should evoke a sense of shame, not due to the lack of talent or ambition among young people, but because many are struggling to find a clear path to work, self-assurance, and autonomy.

Rather than blaming the youth for being lazy or entitled, a deeper understanding is essential. Through conversations with young people nationwide, it becomes evident that they are filled with talent and determination. They exhibit resilience and creativity, such as self-learning languages, starting businesses, and aspiring to contribute positively to society.

However, these young individuals are navigating challenges that previous generations did not face simultaneously. Factors like a pandemic disrupting their formative years, the captivating nature of social media, unattainable housing markets, and a job market demanding experience upfront contribute to their struggles.

The convergence of these pressures on young people during their transition from childhood to adulthood is unprecedented. Yet, these individuals are often scrutinized and misjudged by those who fail to understand their reality, labeling them as lazy and entitled.

The focus should shift towards adapting systems to meet the evolving needs of young people and employers. Education, mental health services, and welfare support must align with the current challenges faced by the youth, empowering them to overcome barriers and reach their potential.

Creating better pathways from education to employment, enhancing technical and vocational options, providing meaningful work experience, and offering early mental health assistance are crucial steps. Employers should also be encouraged to provide opportunities, while welfare systems should facilitate young individuals in exploring work without the fear of setbacks.

Young people are vocal about their aspirations – for meaningful jobs, a chance to establish themselves, and opportunities to excel. It is imperative not to abandon their dreams of employment and growth, but rather to support them in achieving their goals.
