A group of unions has expressed reservations regarding the dedication of a council led by Reform UK to reopening the Doncaster Sheffield Airport. The airport has been closed since 2022 when the previous owner, Peel Group, deemed it financially unsustainable. Although Peel Group still owns the former RAF Finningley base, the Doncaster Council secured a 125-year lease for the property in 2024.
In a bid to facilitate the airport’s revival, council members agreed last November to secure a £57 million loan. However, the unions fear that the council might backtrack on this commitment. Prior to the loan agreement, Doncaster Council greenlit an initial £16 million fund to kickstart the airport’s reopening efforts—a sum that could be lost if the project falters. A report presented to the City of Doncaster Council’s cabinet in October estimated the reopening costs at £193 million.
In response to these concerns, the unions are organizing a demonstration named “save our airport” outside the former Robin Hood Airport on Wednesday to underline their stance. Meanwhile, Fly Doncaster, the operating company, is exploring potential partnerships on-site, including with a fixed base operator to cater to private jets, medical aircraft, and private pilots.
TUC Yorkshire Regional Secretary Dave Pike emphasized the importance of fulfilling the promise to rejuvenate the airport, citing the potential for job creation and economic growth. Sarah Barnes, an organizer from GMB, echoed these sentiments, urging the council to honor its commitment and preserve the region’s access to an international transport hub.
Chris Rawlinson, a regional officer from Unite, stressed the significance of reopening the airport for job opportunities and regional development. While acknowledging concerns about lease terms, Unite advocates for strengthening the project rather than halting it, emphasizing the need for continued investment.
Efforts to reach Doncaster Council for comments on the matter are ongoing.
