“Unsolved Mystery: China Plane Crash Cause Still Unknown”

Date:

March 21, 2022, commemorates the tragic incident that occurred four years ago involving a China Eastern Boeing 737-800. The crash resulted in the loss of all 132 individuals on board, comprising nine crew members and 123 passengers.

Despite the passage of time, Chinese aviation authorities have yet to disclose the official cause of the plane crash. They declined to release the final report in June 2025, citing concerns about national security and social stability.

The catastrophic event unfolded when China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735 crashed in south China’s Guangxi province after suddenly descending in an almost vertical nosedive and colliding with a mountain.

The devastating crash claimed the lives of all 132 occupants within moments. The flight was en route from Kunming to Guangzhou, taking off without any reported anomalies. However, just before the descent phase, the aircraft unexpectedly entered a rapid nosedive from 29,000 feet to 7,400 feet.

Flight data indicates a brief climb to 8,500 feet followed by a second nosedive, leading to the aircraft striking the mountain within two minutes. During this time, the pilots did not respond to communication attempts as the plane rapidly descended.

The incident was described at the time as China’s deadliest air crash in three decades, sending shockwaves globally and prompting concerns within the aviation sector. The tragedy left families of the victims shattered.

Despite recovering two heavily damaged Black Box flight recorders from the crash site, investigations revealed no pre-takeoff faults or abnormalities with the aircraft, engines, weather conditions, or communications. The crew possessed valid licenses, had sufficient rest, and were in good health on the day of the flight. No hazardous cargo or adverse weather conditions were reported aboard.

China Eastern Airlines confirmed the pilots’ competence, health, and family situations, emphasizing their positive attributes. Preliminary assessments by US officials suggested intentional manipulation leading to the fatal nosedive, as indicated by Black Box data.

Further analysis of the flight-data recorders extracted information hinting at deliberate actions. Authorities were exploring the possibility of the crash being a voluntary act, following reports of intentional actions.

In response to speculation regarding intentional actions, the CAAC denounced the claims as misleading and interfering with the investigation. Updates provided by the CAAS on the incident’s anniversaries highlighted the complexity of the case without substantial details.

As of June 2025, the official report remains unpublished due to concerns over national security and social stability. The cause of the tragic crash remains veiled in uncertainty, leaving bereaved families and the aviation industry yearning for closure even four years later.
