Dan, a member of the Exploring With Fighters YouTube channel, led his team into the unsettling Italian town of Fossa, which was emptied in April 2009 following a severe earthquake that raised concerns of a mountainside collapse. Describing the atmosphere, Dan noted, “It’s as if the city itself is grieving.”
The explorers’ footage revealed a house where a dining table remained set, with kitchen drawers left open as residents frantically searched for valuables before fleeing. Dan also encountered poignant reminders of disrupted lives, including an antique pram and a child’s bicycle left behind in the chaos.
Evidence of the earthquake’s impact was visible in the fractured walls, indicating a magnitude of over 3.5 on the Richter scale, with structures on the brink of falling apart. Exploring a property nearly split in two by the disaster, Dan expressed reluctance to venture upstairs.
One poignant discovery was a calendar frozen in time since the tragic night of the earthquake, illustrating the urgency with which families had to evacuate, leaving behind their possessions. The ancient church, teetering on collapse, posed a risk with any slight tremor from the nearby fault line.
Deserted homes still held personal items like plants and televisions, buried under layers of dust, with ceilings collapsed from years of neglect. In a looted shop, remnants from 2009, such as beer bottles and Fanta cans, remained on display.
Nature had reclaimed the town center, with vegetation creeping through shattered windows and cracked pavements. Despite the picturesque balconies overlooking the valley below, Dan cautioned against venturing onto them due to safety concerns.
Drawing a comparison to Fukushima, the devastated Japanese town, Dan highlighted the parallel of catastrophic earthquakes leading to massive evacuations, like the one that displaced over 100,000 residents in Fossa.
