Peter Sichel, a remarkable individual who passed away at the age of 102, had a life filled with diverse roles such as vintner, prisoner, soldier, and spy. His captivating journey included fleeing the Nazis, serving in the army, conducting espionage for the CIA, and popularizing Blue Nun’s Liebfraumilch wine during the 1970s and 80s. This extraordinary life story has now been adapted into a feature film called The Last Spy.
Describing her father’s adeptness at keeping secrets and engaging with people, his daughter Bettina shared, “He had a very charming way about him.” The Last Spy, a cinematic creation by filmmaker Katharina Otto-Bernstein, showcases Peter’s narrative and premiered at the UK Jewish Film Festival in November, with a theatrical release scheduled in selected cinemas starting this Friday.
Born into a wealthy family in Mainz, Germany, Peter belonged to a prominent lineage with ties to the H. Sichel Söhne winery. Following the rise of the Nazis in 1935, Peter and his family sought refuge in Bordeaux, subsequently enduring internment during World War II. Peter’s involvement in the war effort led him to join the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA, where he undertook covert missions, including recruitment of German prisoners for American intelligence operations.
Peter’s experiences during the war inspired the 1951 film Decision Before Dawn. Post-war, he played a pivotal role in addressing the communist threat, shaping intelligence activities during the Cold War era. Despite his impactful contributions, Peter eventually left the CIA in 1960 due to concerns about the agency’s drinking culture affecting his well-being.
Transitioning to a new chapter, Peter ventured into the wine industry, successfully promoting Blue Nun wine in the US market. Known for his strategic acumen, Peter’s marketing efforts, including collaborations with celebrities, propelled Blue Nun to widespread popularity, with sales surging in the 1980s.
While reflecting on his intriguing life, Peter emphasized the enduring allure of espionage, stating, “People will always want to find out what the other people are doing.” The Last Spy film, capturing Peter’s extraordinary journey, is now showing in selected cinemas and available on Apple TV from Friday.
