A massive US Air Force bomber encountered an in-flight emergency while flying over the southern coast of England today.
The B52 bomber was observed circling at an altitude of around 10,000 feet just east of Southampton. Identified by registration number 60-0060, the aircraft issued a 7700 signal, commonly used by pilots to indicate a general emergency, before initiating a descent.
The Boeing B-52H Stratofortress was en route to its home base at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire due to a depressurization problem. The official confirmation of the emergency is pending from both the US Air Force and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Depressurization occurs when a structural issue such as a broken seal, fuselage damage, or system malfunction causes a sudden loss of pressure inside the cabin. This leads to the internal air aligning with the thin external air at high altitudes. Since the B-52 operates at levels where the air is not breathable, a pressurized cabin is crucial for crew safety. Any failure of this system is treated as an emergency.
The B-52 is part of a Bomber Task Force (BTF) stationed at RAF Fairford, a primary forward base for the US Air Force in Europe. Despite being an RAF facility, it is managed by the USAF and designed to accommodate heavy bombers like the Boeing B-52H Stratofortress and the Rockwell B-1B Lancer.
RAF Fairford is frequently utilized for NATO exercises and extended missions spanning Europe and Africa. It boasts one of the longest runways in the UK, capable of supporting large aircraft like the B-52.
