An Iranian drone targeted a runway at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, prompting the evacuation of UK military families stationed there. Following the incident, the UK granted permission for the US to carry out attacks from British bases, a decision previously withheld. Approximately 94,000 British nationals are now stranded in the Middle East, prompting a massive evacuation effort by the Foreign Office.

Tragically, the crisis deepened as a school in Iran was struck, resulting in the deaths of nearly 150 girls, while a separate attack in Israel claimed nine lives. The school was located adjacent to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facility. In response to Iran’s retaliatory strikes, three American service members lost their lives, with President Trump cautioning of potential further casualties. The US had deployed a substantial naval presence in the Arabian Sea, anticipating the need for military action amid stalled negotiations with Iran.
Efforts to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means faltered, with Iran dismissing Trump’s claims of willingness to negotiate. Confrontations intensified as Iran’s proxy force in Lebanon, Hezbollah, engaged in cross-border missile exchanges with Israeli forces. Meanwhile, Iran mobilized troops towards its northern border with Iraq to prevent Kurdish rebels from smuggling arms into Iranian territory. Amid the leadership vacuum, a temporary council assumed control, consisting of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi. The selection of a new supreme leader will be overseen by the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body comprising 88 members, with Mohseni-Ejei emerging as a leading candidate.
