“US Launches Attacks on Iran Amid Middle East Peace Talks”

Date:

Middle East peace negotiations faced a significant setback as the United States launched attacks on various locations in southern Iran, while Iranian forces claimed to have shot down a $30 million American MQ-9 attack drone.

Explosions were reported late on Monday in the Iranian town of Bandar Abbas and other areas in southern Iran as conflict reignited between Israel and Hezbollah. Simultaneously, amidst ongoing discussions, Israel and Hezbollah engaged in missile exchanges, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning of a potential escalation. These attacks have jeopardized the fragile ceasefires in conflict zones within Iran since April 8 and Lebanon since April 17.

An intelligence report obtained by the Daily Mirror characterized the US actions as “strategic chaos,” suggesting that the ceasefire was never aimed at achieving peace but rather served as a tactical pause for both sides to regroup and resupply.

Iran was noted to still possess around 60% of its missile launchers and 40% of its drone arsenal, indicating its readiness to sustain a prolonged conflict. In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Motjaba Khamenei issued a warning that American bases in the Middle East would no longer be secure.

Furthermore, Khamenei emphasized Iran’s efforts to bolster the “resistance front” by strengthening ties with proxies in Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq. With an increasingly assertive stance in controlling the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Iran has heightened tensions with its adversaries.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran retaliated against US attacks on boats mining local waters and missile sites in southern Iran, vowing to seek revenge. Despite the escalation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that negotiations with Iran would persist, expressing hope for progress in the coming days.

Following the recent strikes, Rubio acknowledged the ongoing military actions, stating the need for intensified efforts. Israeli forces targeted over 70 Hezbollah sites across Lebanon, resulting in the elimination of more than 600 militants. Netanyahu underscored the necessity of escalating strikes to combat the perceived threats.

Reports indicated that Israel’s foreign ministry had launched a lobbying campaign in Washington to caution against releasing frozen Iranian assets, fearing they would benefit Hezbollah. The US military clarified its strikes on Iran as self-defence measures, aimed at countering threats posed by Iranian forces and safeguarding American troops during the ceasefire period.

CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins identified the targets as missile launch sites and Iranian vessels attempting to deploy mines, emphasizing the continued use of restraint amid the ongoing conflict dynamics.
