An American military member lost their life in a planned explosion of unexploded ammunition in northern Iraq, marking the third recent US casualty. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the fatality on July 19, revealing that the incident occurred on July 18 and resulted in another service member sustaining minor injuries during the detonation. The identities of the victims were not disclosed.
This death brings the total number of US soldiers killed to 17 since the onset of hostilities with Iran on February 28, when joint US-Israeli strikes targeted various locations in Iran. On a separate occasion, two additional US service members were killed in Iranian attacks in Jordan, with a third service member reported missing.
CENTCOM announced on Sunday the discovery of unidentified remains at the location, with efforts underway to identify them. The statement issued by CENTCOM highlighted the deaths of two US service members and the disappearance of another in Jordan following the Iranian attack on July 17.
Furthermore, another US service member in northern Iraq lost their life on July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from an Iranian drone. A second service member sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical care for a minor wound.
The conflict has claimed thousands of lives, predominantly in Iran and Lebanon, amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran. Recent clashes have intensified, with both nations launching attacks on each other in the Gulf region following the collapse of a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The MoU, signed on June 17 to end the conflict within 60 days, faced setbacks leading to Iran’s withdrawal due to alleged US violations. President Donald Trump declared the end of the ceasefire during a NATO summit in Turkey, labeling the opposing faction as “scum” and expressing his reluctance to engage further in negotiations.
