Twins Lori and George Schappell, connected at the head and sharing part of their brains, had a remarkable bond with a surprising twist. Despite initial medical doubts about their longevity, the siblings surpassed expectations, earning the title of the world’s oldest living conjoined twins according to the Guinness World Records since 2022.
Living seemingly ordinary lives, engaging in hobbies, maintaining relationships, and living independently, George harbored a significant secret from Lori. Originally identified as female at birth, George, previously known as Dori, bravely came out as a transgender man in 2007, adopting the name David to align with his true gender identity.
Reflecting on his journey, George expressed, “I have always known my true identity. It was a tough decision to reveal this truth, but I couldn’t continue living a lie. I needed to be true to myself.” Lori, initially taken aback by George’s revelation, quickly rallied behind her brother, expressing pride in their unbreakable bond.
Despite their unique circumstances, the twins led remarkably ordinary lives. Lori excelled in ten-pin bowling, while George pursued a career as a country singer. Emphasizing their independence, George shared, “We lead very typical lives. We travel, maintain our home, and even explore relationships. Nothing hinders us from pursuing our dreams.”
Moving out at 21, the twins resided in a two-bedroom apartment, alternating rooms each night. Lori’s room exuded a feminine touch, reflecting her personality, while George adorned his space with music memorabilia.
Having been born in Pennsylvania in 1961, the twins lived until the age of 62, passing away on April 7, 2024. In a documentary from 1997, when asked about the possibility of separation, George firmly stated, “Absolutely not. Why fix something that isn’t broken?”
