US Warns Drug Cartels: Take Aggressive Action Now

Date:

The United States has issued a warning to take aggressive action against drug cartels in multiple countries. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the need for Latin American nations to combat gangs effectively to ensure US and border security. Hegseth stated that the US is ready to confront these threats and act independently if required.

This message was delivered during the inaugural “Americas Counter Cartel Conference,” attended by representatives from various conservative governments aligned with President Donald Trump. The conference focused on the escalating challenges posed by organized crime networks to regional stability and border security.

Under the current strategy, cartels have been classified as foreign terrorist organizations, enabling direct targeting by the US military. This approach has resulted in numerous operations against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific regions.

The administration justifies this intensified approach as necessary to dismantle violent criminal groups responsible for escalating crime rates, instability, and mass migrations across the Americas. The meeting at the US Southern Command in Florida involved officials from these countries, many of whom are scheduled to meet with President Trump later in the week.

Hegseth highlighted the historical negligence towards organized crime in Latin America, allowing cartel networks to expand unchecked. The conference forms part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to reinforce US influence in the Western Hemisphere, emphasizing military cooperation to combat cartel activities linked to violence, economic turmoil, and migration.

While this military-centric approach has its merits, experts caution about potential risks in regions where armed forces have a tainted history of corruption and human rights violations. Rebecca Bill Chavez, a former deputy assistant defense secretary for Western Hemisphere affairs, warned against militarizing the fight against cartels without strong rule-of-law institutions and civilian oversight.
