The United States is well-equipped to host a 64-team World Cup and could potentially consider bidding for the 2038 tournament, as stated by the head of the current competition’s American task force.
Currently, the US is co-hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico. With Europe, Africa, and South America set to share hosting duties in 2030, followed by Saudi Arabia bringing the event to Asia in 2034, there is a possibility for a new North American bid in 12 years.
Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force on the World Cup, mentioned that it is premature to commit to another bid at this stage. However, he expressed confidence that the US has the necessary infrastructure to host the event again in the near future. He emphasized the country’s welcoming nature and excellent facilities, stating that the US has already built the required stadiums at a significantly lower cost compared to other host nations.
Giuliani highlighted the potential expansion of the World Cup to accommodate 64 teams, affirming that the United States is capable of handling such an increase. While acknowledging the importance of focusing on the current World Cup, he expressed the desire to see the tournament return to the US in the coming decades.
Despite initial concerns raised by human rights groups regarding the impact of immigration policies on supporters, the atmosphere in host cities has been largely positive. Giuliani commended the reception of the tournament during its early weeks, noting the global admiration for the United States during its 250th birthday celebrations.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed the anticipated attendance of President Donald Trump at the final in New Jersey on July 19. Although Trump has not appeared at any matches yet, Giuliani hinted at the possibility of his presence before the championship game, suggesting that surprises may be in store.
Giuliani described Trump as someone who enjoys keeping people intrigued and hinted at potential unexpected developments. He encouraged people to stay tuned for possible surprises as the tournament progresses.
