Vandals Strike Again: Paddington Bear Statue Damaged

Date:

Paddington Bear’s bench in Southampton has been vandalized once again, this time with the legs and several slats missing from the wooden structure. This mindless act has prompted the police to launch an investigation while the council works on repairing the damage and relocating the iconic bear statue.

The incident has left locals questioning why such vandalism occurs and suggesting the installation of CCTV cameras to deter future attacks. The statue, unveiled in October 2024 near the Westquay shopping center, features Paddington Bear in his trademark red hat and blue overcoat, clutching a marmalade sandwich.

Following the recent vandalism, Go! Southampton, the organization responsible for the statue, expressed disappointment but reassured the public that Paddington is safe and being cared for. They have reported the incident to the authorities and are actively seeking a new home for the bear.

In response to the news, social media users have expressed dismay at the senseless act, with some calling the vandals “morons” and advocating for increased security measures in the area. The community’s support for Paddington Bear remains strong despite the unfortunate incident.

The vandalism in Southampton is not an isolated case, as previously, two RAF engineers were convicted of damaging a Paddington statue in Newbury and had to undertake community service and pay for the repairs. Such acts go against the values that Paddington Bear symbolizes, as emphasized by the judge in the case.

The beloved bear continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Southampton residents, with many fondly recalling the statue’s unveiling and the joy it brings to visitors of all ages. Paddington’s enduring spirit of kindness and adventure prevails, even in the face of senseless acts of vandalism.
