Despite being required to participate in a press conference post-match, Venus did not appear. She decided not to attend and refrained from commenting via the WTA or the All England Club. Consequently, she may face a potential fine of up to £37,000 ($50,000) as per the Grand Slam regulations.
The rule dictates that players must attend post-match media sessions unless they have valid reasons like illness or injury. This incident follows criticism of Venus’s sister, Serena, for missing media duties after her singles loss to Maya Joint. Serena, however, provided a statement expressing her joy at returning to Wimbledon.
Serena later revealed a knee injury sustained during her match, excusing her from media obligations with the approval of Wimbledon and WTA medical teams. The sisters were expected to compete in doubles, but Serena’s injury has raised doubts about their participation.
The schedule includes the Williams sisters’ match against Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra on Saturday, though the court allocation is pending. Tournament officials are hopeful that Serena will recover in time to play, considering various factors that may impact scheduling.
