Virgin Media has shared some valuable tips to help maintain consistent internet speeds throughout the year. While it’s common knowledge that positioning your router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal obstructions like fish tanks can enhance performance, the impact of weather changes on broadband may not be as widely recognized.
As temperatures climb in late spring and summer, routers face increased strain, necessitating placement in cool, well-ventilated areas to prevent overheating.
Virgin Media explained in a recent blog post how warmer weather can stress broadband equipment both indoors and outdoors: “High temperatures during hot weather can challenge broadband components, especially the router inside your home.”
“Routers require proper airflow for optimal performance. If your router is concealed behind furniture, placed in a cupboard, near a radiator, or in direct sunlight, heat accumulation, particularly during a heatwave, can lead to slower speeds, dropped connections, or automatic restarts to cool down.”
To combat temperature-related performance issues, it is advisable to relocate your router to a cooler area during warm weather. While hot temperatures can affect internet speed, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt online activities, such as streaming.
Virgin Media emphasized that most weather-related broadband problems often originate indoors: “Factors like thick walls, excessive connected devices, and improper router placement have a more significant daily impact on connection quality than external weather conditions.”
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, positioning the router in a central, open space away from direct sunlight is recommended. Virgin Media also suggests avoiding obstruction from large metal objects or furniture when placing the router.
After severe weather, it is advised to inspect and secure cables to prevent damage. Additionally, reducing interference by limiting simultaneous device connections can help maintain a stable internet connection.
