However, Vance remarked that Carney’s attempt to outshine Trump was amusing, as Canada had to compromise on several issues despite Carney’s portrayal of it as a victory.
Vance highlighted the role of Jivani, referring to him as a “random MP” with a positive rapport, who effectively advocated for Canada behind the scenes. He also downplayed Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Canadian Conservatives, as insignificant in the negotiations.
The White House and Vance’s office had not responded to requests for comments. Trump recently announced a three-day postponement of new tariffs on Canadian goods following discussions with Carney and intense bilateral talks.
Reports suggest that the trade deal will involve the U.S. reducing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, while Carney advised provincial leaders to reintroduce American alcohol in liquor stores. The specifics of Canada’s concessions remain unclear, although Trump claimed that American farmers would benefit from zero tariffs.
Vance emphasized that Trump aimed to alter Canada’s behavior through the negotiations, indicating a shift towards a more Trump-like approach. He highlighted the strained Canada-U.S. relationship due to Trump’s previous tariffs and annexation threats.
Jivani’s involvement in the negotiations, particularly in advocating for mutual benefits in energy and automotive sectors, was noted by Vance. Their long-standing friendship and Jivani’s active role in the discussions were highlighted, with references to their shared history at Yale University.
