Wales Man’s Heart Attack Leads to Travel Ordeal

Date:

During a family vacation in Lanzarote, John Evans, a 61-year-old father of two from Cardiff, Wales, suffered a sudden heart attack. His wife, Annette, a nurse, became concerned when he started feeling unwell at their resort. Following a visit to the hospital, John underwent emergency treatment, including the insertion of a stent due to a blockage in a critical artery.

As John recovered in the hospital, the family faced an additional challenge. With their children scheduled to fly home the next day, John’s condition left them uncertain about how to manage the children’s travel arrangements. Eventually, John and Annette provided consent for another family to accompany their children back to the UK.

Despite having all necessary documentation, including a consent letter, the family encountered obstacles at the airport. EasyJet staff informed them that children under 15 must travel with an adult. This unexpected development meant the children had to remain in Lanzarote while arrangements were made for their return home.

After navigating through conflicting information between the airport and local authorities, the children were eventually able to fly back to the UK with their godmother on a different airline. John, who spent a week in the hospital before returning home, expressed frustration over the situation and the lack of clarity provided by the airline.

While the majority of the additional expenses were covered by travel insurance, the experience left a lasting impact on John and his family. Despite an apology from easyJet acknowledging the challenges faced, John emphasized the emotional toll the incident had on his family, particularly his children.

EasyJet responded by reiterating their commitment to safeguarding minors and explained the protocol for children traveling without a parent or legal guardian. They expressed willingness to assist the family further and address any concerns that arose during the ordeal.
