Weight loss injections have been prescribed to military personnel struggling with weight issues. Last year, 240 soldiers received the Mounjaro and Wegovy jabs to aid in shedding excess fat, a significant increase from the 73 individuals who received the injections in 2024.
Among those who received the injections, 128 were from the army, 58 from the RAF, and 54 from the Navy. Furthermore, 46 were officers, while the remaining 194 were enlisted personnel.
Data from the Ministry of Defence reveals that a considerable number of military personnel fail their annual fitness assessments. Some individuals are dismissed annually due to obesity, with a few weighing over 26 stone before departure.
Additionally, a subset of army members has waist measurements exceeding 55 inches, with a limited number granted access to liposuction treatments for weight management.
Official records indicate that over 11,000 soldiers, 4,300 sailors, and 3,900 aircrew members are classified as obese based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). However, the military asserts that BMI is not always an accurate measure as some individuals have a higher muscle mass ratio.
Medical records indicate that nearly 6,000 service members were prescribed anti-depressants, while 2,500 received sleeping aids last year. Moreover, 872 military personnel were given Viagra or similar medications, with a breakdown of 409 army personnel, 239 navy members, and 224 from the RAF.
Former British Military Intelligence Colonel, Philip Ingram, commended the military’s use of various medical interventions to improve personnel fitness, emphasizing the importance of retaining experienced individuals.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson highlighted that only a small percentage of the Armed Forces face obesity issues, with comprehensive lifestyle, dietary, and medical support provided to those affected. Weight loss drugs are considered case by case as part of a holistic wellness program, always prioritizing safety and requiring thorough medical evaluation before any medication is administered to military personnel.
