The labor union representing WestJet’s flight attendants has disclosed the terms of the recent agreement reached with the Calgary-based airline following a brief strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that the deal entails an increase of over 18% in wages spread over three years, along with the introduction of a new “duty period premium” to compensate employees for ground duties. Additionally, the agreement includes extended time off, enhanced food and uniform allowances, and other benefits.
During the long weekend, WestJet suspended all its flights across a significant portion of Canada as 4,400 flight attendants prepared to strike, commencing early Sunday. However, a tentative agreement was reached between the airline and the union early Monday, leading to a gradual return to normal flight operations at WestJet.
The cabin crew members are scheduled to vote on the proposed deal in the upcoming weeks, determining its final acceptance.
