Two white doves were released as a symbolic gesture today to honor the memory of the two individuals who lost their lives in the London Docklands IRA bombing exactly three decades ago. A moving memorial service took place near the location where Inam Bashir and John Jeffries tragically perished on February 9, 1996. The doves, released over the nearby Millwall Inner Dock, symbolized the two friends, as well as all victims of terrorist attacks worldwide, according to the event organizer, Jonathan Ganesh. Nearly 50 people gathered for the multi-faith service under the Docklands Light Railway at South Quay.
A minute of silence was impeccably observed, with the Docklands Victims Association, led by Ganesh, distributing special dove lapel badges to attendees. Ganesh expressed his sentiments, emphasizing the need to remember all those who have been victims of terrorism, particularly highlighting the lives of his friends, Inam and JJ, who were well-respected members of the community.
Among the dignitaries present at the service was London’s deputy mayor, Joanne McCartney, who remarked that the attack’s aim to instill fear had ultimately failed. Ganesh, who was a 23-year-old part-time security guard on that tragic evening, recalled the chilling moment of walking past the lorry carrying the bomb just before it was detonated using Semtex provided by Libya.
In an interview with the Mirror, Ganesh vowed to continue the quest for justice, pointing out the unanswered questions and the ongoing struggles with the lack of transparency surrounding the incident. He, along with two others, is pursuing a civil action against Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, seeking symbolic damages of £1 and holding Adams personally accountable for the IRA bombings in London, despite his consistent denial of any involvement with the IRA.
