Firefighters are currently battling a large wildfire in the Peak District amid soaring temperatures in June. The fire started at Tintwistle Moor near Glossop and Tameside late on Wednesday night, devastating wooded and grassy areas. Crews from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze, with six fire crews, a water carrier, and a welfare unit on site.
Dramatic footage from the Derby Mountain Rescue Team reveals the extent of the fire, which has impacted approximately 400 square meters of moorland and woodland. Meanwhile, the Met Office confirmed that temperatures soared to 36.7C in Merryfield, Somerset, marking a new record for the hottest June day in the UK, surpassing the previous day’s record of 36.1C in Gosport, Hampshire.
High Peak MP Jon Pearce expressed concern about the wildfire, emphasizing the importance of protecting moorlands and communities during hot, dry weather conditions. He urged the public to be cautious while enjoying the countryside, advising against using disposable barbecues, lighting fires, leaving litter, or discarding glass bottles.
Due to the fire, the A628 Woodhead Pass has been closed between the Gun Inn, Mottram Moor, and the roundabout at Flouch. Authorities have warned people to stay away from the area and to keep windows and doors closed if they smell or see smoke. National Highways has also confirmed the closure of A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions between the A57 and A616, recommending motorists to use the M62 as an alternative route.
