Massive wildfires are currently devastating regions in south-west France and central Spain, resulting in the evacuation of approximately 200,000 individuals, including British tourists.
According to the French interior ministry, about 141,000 people have been displaced from their residences in the Gironde and Landes departments in France. Some residents had to escape by boat as fires engulfed the popular tourist spot on France’s Atlantic coast.
In central Spain, around 60,000 individuals have been compelled to leave their homes in towns west of Madrid, as reported by the Spanish interior ministry. The fires in the capital city and the adjacent province of Ávila have prompted the government to announce a national emergency for wildfires for the first time.
The significant wildfire in south-west France, covering an area of 140 square kilometers, initiated near the Cap Ferret peninsula on Wednesday. Situated just 37 miles west of Bordeaux, the peninsula typically offers picturesque landscapes, sandy beaches, oyster-farming villages, and upscale resorts.
Approximately 141,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes in the Gironde and Landes areas in south-west France due to a large wildfire causing extensive damage, as stated by the French interior ministry.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, speaking to French TV channel Tf1, mentioned that the wildfire, spanning 140 square kilometers, has led to 110,000 people fleeing their homes in the Gironde region and is now moving towards Bordeaux.
“During the afternoon, we were informed that, due to a change in wind direction, it had transformed into a substantial, self-sustaining fire that is extremely challenging to contain,” he stated.
“It is currently progressing eastward towards the Bordeaux metropolitan area. We are reorganizing our efforts to combat it on the ground and prevent its advance toward Bordeaux.”
In Spain, a national emergency for wildfires was declared by the government for the first time, with Regional President Isabel Díaz-Ayuso describing the wildfire near Madrid as the most severe in the capital’s history.
The fires in Madrid and the nearby Ávila province have necessitated the evacuation of approximately 60,000 individuals from towns west of the capital.
Two major fires near Madrid merged into a single blaze, rapidly scorching 11.5 square miles by Friday afternoon.
Francisco Martín, the central government representative for the Madrid region, indicated that an additional 20,000 people have been instructed to stay indoors in towns west of the capital.
Martín highlighted the possibility of further evacuations and emphasized the current priority of safeguarding the town of San Lorenzo, home to the Escorial, Philip II’s 16th-century royal palace, and monastery.
Carlos Novillo, emergency management chief of Madrid’s regional government, remarked, “At this moment, the fire situation is critical. It exceeds our extinguishing capabilities, with the fire head outpacing containment efforts as it progresses.
“In this region, direct firefighting is not feasible. Our focus is on protecting residential areas and reinforcing the right flank, which is of utmost concern due to an anticipated wind shift today.”
