Amid the ongoing wildfires in Spain and France, the first casualty has been confirmed today as more than 270,000 individuals have evacuated their residences. The body of a man was discovered in a car in a ravine in the Spanish town of Manises following a forest fire. Smoke and ash are descending on Spain’s capital due to massive wildfires burning to the west, prompting the president to declare a national emergency.
In France, 500 military personnel were deployed to assist in combating the fires, with an additional 1,500 expected to join the efforts. The inferno in the Gironde region in Western France has been blazing since Wednesday, posing a threat to the nearby city of Bordeaux. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced the deployment of a military transport aircraft and other water-dropping aircraft to battle the flames.
Authorities have issued evacuation orders for areas between the fire and Bordeaux, including parts of the city’s western suburbs and neighboring towns. The priority is safeguarding human lives, emphasized by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. Nearly 197,000 people have been evacuated from south-west France as the fire approaches Bordeaux, creating its own weather phenomena with the appearance of a pyrocumulonimbus – a thunderstorm induced by a large fire – a rare occurrence witnessed for the first time in France.
In Madrid, fires are raging in the outskirts, with efforts underway to prevent the merging of different fire fronts. The fires have forced the shutdown of a Nasa facility west of the city. In Spain, over 70,000 individuals have been evacuated, with an additional 20,000 advised to remain indoors. Several European countries, including Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, have offered support by providing water-dropping planes and helicopters to assist in combating the fires.
