“Wizz Air Pilot Reveals Hidden Gem: Bilbao, Spain”

Date:

A seasoned pilot with over 750 flights under his belt and a passport stamped in more than 50 countries over the span of four years has disclosed a hidden gem in Europe that often goes unnoticed by holidaymakers.

When planning a sunny escape, many travelers seek destinations off the beaten path to avoid tourist crowds, crowded attractions, and long lines, opting instead for quieter spots to discover something new.

There is a plethora of enchanting European cities brimming with charisma and allure beyond the usual tourist hubs. However, pinpointing the ideal destination can be challenging. Fortunately, Wizz Air pilot Tom Copestake has a top recommendation for vacationers.

In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, Tom highlighted Bilbao as a must-visit destination: “I recently landed in Bilbao – a fantastic spot on the northern coast. Surrounded by stunning mountains or hills perfect for hiking, the region offers excellent walking opportunities in northern Spain.”

He elaborated, “During my chat with the ground handling agent in Bilbao, he raved about the area’s beauty and encouraged us to explore further. Just a stone’s throw away from Bilbao lies San Sebastiá, an incredible place worth a visit.”

Bilbao, a lively and colorful port city in northern Spain, boasts verdant mountains and a meandering river valley at its core. Renowned for its Basque heritage, avant-garde architecture, and world-class art scene, Bilbao is a cultural oasis.

The city’s iconic Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, showcases contemporary art exhibitions and features the towering ‘Puppy’ statue overlooking the urban landscape. Amidst the modern architectural marvels, the historic Casco Viejo old town beckons with its medieval streets, the majestic Santiago Cathedral, and the bustling Mercado de la Ribera – one of Europe’s largest covered food markets.

Food enthusiasts will delight in Bilbao’s gastronomic offerings, including the famed local tapas known as pintxos and an array of fresh seafood. The city teems with lively bars, vibrant restaurants, and cozy cafes where visitors can savor the delectable cuisine and immerse themselves in the bustling ambiance.

Apart from the Guggenheim Museum, notable attractions in Bilbao include the Museum of Fine Arts, the iconic Zubizuri Bridge (White Bridge), and the Artxanda Funicular, providing panoramic mountain views. Nearby, the Bizkaia Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as the world’s first gondola-suspended bridge for both pedestrians and vehicles.

With new routes from London Luton to Bilbao starting from £26.99, Wizz Air has made it easier for travelers to explore this enchanting city. The airline has also introduced several new Spanish routes, connecting travelers to Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, and Seville.

Reflecting on his role as a pilot and his Bilbao recommendation, Tom shared, “This job is about customer service within the aviation industry, and I find it fascinating that each of the thousands of passengers I’ve flown has a unique story and purpose for their travels. Whether for leisure, family visits, or work assignments in different countries, it’s a privilege to be part of their journey.”
