The Australian defense minister has verified that a drone strike targeted an air base operated by Australia near Dubai during the recent weekend. Tensions in the Middle East have extended into their fourth day, with the United States and Israel conducting joint strikes on multiple Iranian targets on February 28. In response, Iran has carried out several strikes across the Middle East following the passing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, leading to a series of military actions in the region.
Richard Marles, Australia’s Minister of Defence, informed the media that the Australian air base near Dubai was struck by a drone over the weekend. Fortunately, there were no Australian casualties in the attack, as reported by the BBC. Additionally, various sites in different countries have been targeted, such as the United Kingdom’s RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, a popular holiday destination.
Marles mentioned that on the initial night, there was an attack at the Al Minhad Air Base, but all Australian personnel present were safe and unharmed. The air base serves as the Middle East headquarters for the Australian Defence Force and is utilized by multiple western military forces. Australia currently has around 100 personnel stationed in the Middle East, with the majority based in the UAE.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has previously expressed his country’s support for the actions taken by the US and Israel to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to deter the nation from posing threats to international peace and security.
