A man has been sentenced to one year in prison for assaulting his wife with a livestock whip while she was holding their infant. The man, who remains anonymous for legal reasons, admitted to engaging in coercive control, inflicting physical and verbal abuse on his wife for over two decades.
In a court hearing at the Central Criminal Court in Cork, Ireland, it was revealed that the man repeatedly physically attacked his wife, even when she was pregnant. The victim recounted instances where he threatened to harm her, including burning down their home. Additionally, he monitored her every move, bombarding her with controlling text messages and imposing strict conditions on her movements.
Despite initially claiming victimhood, the man later expressed remorse for his actions. His abusive behavior spanned from January 2019 to September 2020, coinciding with the implementation of the coercive control law in Ireland. The abuse ceased when the woman finally decided to leave him in September 2020.
The victim described a harrowing ordeal of enduring constant degradation and control by her husband. She detailed how he belittled her, controlled her social interactions, and instilled fear in her, leading to feelings of worthlessness and suicidal thoughts. The woman ultimately found the strength to leave the toxic relationship for the sake of her children.
Acknowledging the victim’s bravery, Ms. Justice Siobhan Lankford handed down a sentence of 18 months, with the final six months suspended. The man, who had a history of violent behavior, acknowledged his actions and voluntarily enrolled in a program to address his violent tendencies.
