Professional swimmer Neil Gilson, a world champion, finds motivation in his 10-year-old son Jack as he undertakes a challenging feat to swim across the 10 largest lakes in Switzerland. Known as ‘The Legend of the Lakes,’ Neil recently set a new world record by completing a 61km swim of Lake Maggiore in 17 hours and 14 minutes.
Neil, a father of three, was inspired by his son’s struggles with severe anxiety and behavioral changes at a young age, leading to a diagnosis of PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections). After undergoing treatment and surgery, Jack showed significant improvement, motivating Neil to raise awareness and funds for PANS PANDAS UK charity.
Neil’s determination to support the charity led him to embark on multiple swimming challenges, including setting world records for swimming several Swiss lakes. His ongoing quest to swim the 10 largest Swiss lakes will culminate in Lake Geneva, with Neil becoming the first person to achieve this feat, recognized by Guinness World Records.
Prior to each swim, Neil and his team meticulously assess the conditions and safety measures, emphasizing the importance of respecting the unpredictability of open water. Through his challenges and advocacy, Neil aims to raise awareness about PANDAS and inspire others to prioritize safety in water activities.
Neil’s unwavering dedication to his cause stems from his deep bond with his son Jack, whom he considers his source of strength and motivation. As Neil continues his remarkable journey, he remains committed to spreading awareness and supporting those affected by similar conditions, underscoring the significance of early diagnosis and holistic treatment approaches.
