A writer who harassed the former Conservative chancellor George Osborne and his wife Thea Rogers has been given a suspended jail sentence. Lydia Suffield, aged 29, sent false emails to the couple’s acquaintances, reported them to social services, and even sent gifts to their children. Mr. Osborne described the harassment as severely distressing, involving numerous emails to their social circle.
The freelance writer also made misleading referrals to a children’s charity, leading to investigations into drug abuse and child neglect by the couple. Mr. Osborne expressed the profound impact of the stalking, stating the debilitating nature of such harassment.
Suffield used multiple anonymous email accounts to spread harmful allegations, which the prosecutor refrained from detailing in court to prevent further harm. Mr. Osborne labeled the stalking as a deliberate attempt to disrupt their lives, while Ms. Rogers described it as a malicious act that significantly affected her well-being.
The stalking began with social media contact in 2020 and escalated in 2022, involving false allegations and disturbing messages to various individuals associated with the couple. Despite claiming the information was publicly available, the writer’s actions caused significant distress, culminating in sending inappropriate gifts and making false reports before the couple’s wedding.
The court heard that Suffield, who has certain neurological conditions, was arrested in October 2023. Electronic devices and notebooks seized by the police revealed a disturbing level of obsession with George Osborne, including fan fiction and personal information about his family.
Suffield admitted to lesser stalking offenses but denied the more severe charges. The judge sentenced her to a suspended custodial term, emphasizing the seriousness of her actions and warning of imprisonment for any future offenses. The judge highlighted Suffield’s persistent and disruptive behavior, causing prolonged distress to the victims.
Furthermore, Suffield was ordered to undergo rehabilitation activities, pay costs, and abide by a restraining order prohibiting contact with specific individuals. The judge concluded that the stalking was premeditated, causing significant distress over an extended period.
