“Yellow Weather Warning: Thunderstorms Threaten Power and Floods”

Date:

Heavy showers, thunderstorms, and hail are expected to impact six areas, potentially causing power outages and flash flooding on Wednesday. The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, warning of possible building damage from strong winds, floodwater, lightning strikes, and hail.

The warning will be in effect from 10 am to 9 pm in parts of northern Scotland. The forecast predicts slow-moving showers, thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and hail, with the potential for 20-30mm of rain in 1-2 hours and up to 50mm in some areas over 3-6 hours. This could lead to localized flash flooding and disruptions to transportation networks.

In addition to flooded homes and businesses and building damage, the Met Office warns of challenging driving conditions, potential road closures, and travel delays for trains and buses. Power cuts and service disruptions to homes and businesses are also possible.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, gather essential supplies like torches and mobile phone power packs, and prepare for the severe weather conditions. Northern Ireland is also under a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, with potential travel disruptions, flooding, and power outages until 9 pm.

Meanwhile, firefighters in England and Wales are battling wildfires amidst high temperatures in the late 20s, with no rain in sight. Wales and half of England are experiencing drought conditions.
