A young woman named Noelia Castillo Ramos, 25, who was left paralyzed after two separate rape incidents, ultimately faced her final moments alone before undergoing euthanasia. Noelia, a resident of Barcelona, had been paralyzed from the waist down following a suicide attempt in 2022. Despite enduring severe pain, she had sought permission for assisted suicide, which was initially opposed by her father but later approved by the European Court of Human Rights after an 18-month legal battle.
In her last moments, Noelia was accompanied by her mother, Yolanda Ramos, at Sant Camil Hospital, where her other family members also gathered to spend time with her. However, before receiving lethal injections, Noelia requested privacy and asked to be alone with the administering doctor. She received three injections, the last of which induced a cardiac arrest.
Prior to her assisted suicide, Noelia expressed her desire to die looking beautiful, wearing her prettiest dress and makeup. Despite her family’s disapproval of euthanasia, Noelia stood firm in her decision, citing the unbearable suffering she had endured. Her father, supported by a conservative group, had tried to prevent her euthanasia through legal channels in Spain, but the Constitutional Court and later the European Court of Human Rights rejected his appeals.
Noelia’s father had witnessed her previous suicide attempt and had opposed her wish for euthanasia. Despite the family’s differences in opinion, her mother respected Noelia’s decision. For emotional support, individuals can contact the Samaritans helpline.
