A content creator on YouTube reported being attacked and robbed of his phone while trying to film a video showcasing one of Glasgow’s reputedly tough pubs.
Known as Danny and the operator of the Honest Places channel, he embarked on a tour of the most rugged drinking spots in the northern part of the city. The video starts with him consuming half a bottle of Buckfast before heading to the Garngad Bar in Royston, where he interacted with two amiable regulars who agreed to a game of pool.
Characterizing the bar as “respectable” with friendly service, he then proceeded to The Budgie on Blochairn Road and Morven Bar in Springburn, noting that both places had a slightly rough vibe. Subsequently, Danny was directed to Bells Bar.
Upon arriving at the pub after traversing the area, he was immediately approached by three locals outside who inquired about his filming activities. In the video, one of them is heard stating, “You don’t film here.”
According to reports from Glasgow Live, Danny alleged that one of the men seized his camera while demanding it to be turned off. The tension escalates on camera as one of the individuals grabs a chair as if to throw it, before being restrained by a companion.
Another man is then seen lifting a chair but eventually sets it down. After asking if he could visit a nearby pub, he was instructed to leave as the group continued to verbally attack him. Following a cut in the footage, Danny reappears on camera claiming that four men chased him, assaulted him, and stole his phone and glasses, resulting in a chipped tooth.
Bells Bar had previously drawn attention due to a violent machete attack last year that severely injured a 39-year-old man. Video footage of the incident showed a perpetrator pulling out a foot-long blade and striking a seated man, causing blood to splatter across the surroundings.
Despite the disturbing event, pub patrons seemed oblivious, carrying on with karaoke and singing while the victim tried to shield himself from further harm. Police investigations into the attack are ongoing.
After the ordeal, Danny revisited the pub to inquire about the assailants. He mentioned that someone was able to contact them, leading to the return of his belongings.
Leaving the area, he ventured into Glasgow city center, where he met a local vlogger and explored popular spots like Chrystal Bell, Tolbooth, and McChuills in the Merchant City district. The video, which has garnered over 200,000 views, garnered mixed reactions from viewers, with some showing little sympathy towards Danny’s experience.
Comments from viewers varied, with one emphasizing the importance of situational awareness, while another criticized the use of a conspicuous camera. Another viewer suggested a different notorious pub to visit, and a different one likened the encounter to a suspenseful video game moment.
Lastly, a commentator recounted the recent violent incident at Bells Bar and its impact on a former bar staff member.
