“Yulin Dog Meat Festival Sparks Outrage Again”

Date:

An annual controversial festival in Yulin, China, known for its consumption of dog and cat meat, has sparked outrage once again despite widespread opposition.

The Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival has commenced in Yulin amid concerns from animal rights activists who fear the slaughter of thousands of animals before the festival concludes on June 30.

Since its initiation in 2010, the 10-day festival has faced continuous criticism, leading local authorities to distance themselves from the event starting in 2014.

Reports indicate that dogs and cats are subjected to long-distance transportation under harsh conditions, deprived of food and water, only to be slaughtered during the festival, where an estimated 10,000 animals have been traditionally killed and consumed.

Campaigners have raised alarms stating that these animals are often stolen from homes or abducted from streets, as documented images depict terrified animals confined in wire cages without sustenance.

Recently, Humane World for Animals released footage condemning the intensified dog and cat meat trade in Yulin, calling for an end to the inhumane practices and public health risks associated with the festival.

Critics argue that the festival, occurring during the summer solstice, symbolizes the broader trade in dog and cat meat.

In a positive turn, recent efforts by activists led to the rescue of nine dogs, including three wearing collars believed to be stolen pets, underscoring the impact of advocacy against the event.

Animal welfare groups credit national and global pressure campaigns for reducing the number of dogs slaughtered during the festival’s peak period, estimating the current figure to be between 2,000 and 3,000 dogs.
