Mark Zuckerberg is under scrutiny following reports that his yacht crew did not respond to a distress call from a stranded skiff off the coast of Alaska. According to the Alaska Beacon, the skiff had requested assistance on Aug. 3, and the nearby Wilderness Legacy cruise ship came to its aid by towing it to Farragut Bay in southeast Alaska.
Maritime regulations mandate that all vessels must assist in response to distress calls unless their own safety is compromised. Maritime law expert Ian Ralby emphasized the duty to rescue individuals at sea to mitigate the inherent risks involved.
Despite its closer proximity, Zuckerberg’s yacht, named Launchpad, did not acknowledge the distress call. A spokesperson for Zuckerberg clarified to the Alaska Beacon that the crew had not heard the call initially and, upon becoming aware, another ship had already intervened.
The spokesperson further explained that the Coast Guard had confirmed the skiff was not in immediate distress, and the crew had missed the distress call due to monitoring a different radio channel. Fortunately, all parties involved were safe, and Zuckerberg and his family were not present on the yacht at the time of the incident.
