An intense seismic event rattled the southern region of the Philippines on Wednesday. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.3, struck 32km southwest of Sarangani, reaching a depth of 10km. Despite the significant tremor, authorities confirmed that there is no immediate tsunami threat to the area.
Reports indicate that there have been no casualties or damages reported so far. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people running and shouting as the ground shook during a government subsidy distribution event.
Although the United States Geological Survey (USGS) predicts a low likelihood of casualties from the earthquake, concerns arise as some residents in vulnerable structures may face substantial property damage. The impact of the quake has also been felt in Indonesia alongside the Philippines.
This earthquake occurrence follows a previous disaster just two months ago when a magnitude-7.8 earthquake off the coast of Mindanao island displaced over 10,000 families and resulted in 35 fatalities with more than 100 injuries. Tsunami alerts were issued for various countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia, but were later lifted or reduced.
