“Speculation Swirls as Labour MP Gwynne Considers Commons Resignation”

Date:

Andy Burnham has expressed his lack of information regarding rumors suggesting that a suspended Labour MP is on the verge of resigning from the Commons. The MP in question, Andrew Gwynne representing Gorton and Denton, is reportedly considering stepping down, which would prompt a by-election for the North West seat. Last year, Mr. Gwynne was dismissed as a minister and suspended from the Labour Party due to inappropriate messages in a WhatsApp group called Trigger Me Timbers.

Speculation has arisen that Andy Burnham, the current Greater Manchester Mayor and former Cabinet minister, might vie for the seat and challenge Keir Starmer’s leadership. However, Burnham stated that he has not been officially informed, nor has he had any discussions with Gwynne or his associates on the matter, emphasizing his focus on his duties as Mayor. If Burnham decides to run in a by-election, he would require approval from Labour’s governing body, the National Executive Committee, which is believed to be aligned with Keir Starmer. A potential block on Burnham’s candidacy could lead to internal strife within the party.

In response to the situation, Fire Brigades Union general secretary Steve Wright criticized the notion of preventing Burnham from seeking selection as Labour’s candidate, emphasizing the FBU’s support for his involvement in the electoral process. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer refrained from expressing a clear stance on Burnham’s potential candidacy, highlighting their past collaborations and the importance of effective governmental partnerships.

While Andrew Gwynne previously denied intentions to vacate his seat, recent reports suggest he has reached an agreement with the Commons regarding his pension, potentially paving the way for his retirement from Parliament. Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged Gwynne’s health challenges and emphasized the need for strong candidates in the event of a by-election, leaving the decision on candidacy to Burnham and the party members.

The Mirror has sought comment from Mr. Gwynne on the matter.
