TUI Provides Update on Airspace Restrictions Impacting UK Travelers
TUI has released new information for its customers in light of ongoing airspace limitations affecting British travelers due to recent events in the Middle East.
Numerous airlines have faced significant travel disruptions, resulting in the cancellation of flights departing from the UK to Middle Eastern destinations following recent US-Israeli actions in Iran. Consequently, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has advised against non-essential travel to the United Arab Emirates, affecting airlines like TUI with delayed or cancelled flights.
In response to the situation, TUI has announced collaboration with airlines including Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar Airways to facilitate the return of stranded customers in the Middle East. Repatriation flights are set to commence from Tuesday, March 3.
Sebastian Ebel, CEO of TUI Group, stated, “We anticipate initiating the first flights today in partnership with these airlines to repatriate our guests.”
In a subsequent update on March 3, TUI reiterated its commitment to customer safety, highlighting ongoing coordination with partner airlines and authorities to ensure swift and secure return travel arrangements. The initial repatriation flights, operated by Gulf carriers such as Emirates, are slated to begin promptly, with further flight reconnections currently under discussion.
Moreover, TUI expressed readiness to operate special flights using its own aircraft to support customer repatriation, despite not typically serving the region. However, the commencement of such operations is subject to governmental approvals and coordination, delaying the confirmation of a specific start date.
TUI pledged to provide timely updates to customers as additional information becomes available.
In another development on March 3, TUI addressed travel arrangements to Cyprus, emphasizing that the situation remains fluid and subject to change. While the Cyprus program continues as scheduled, the airline has no planned flights to Cyprus until Wednesday.
As of the latest update, the FCDO has not issued a ‘do not travel’ advisory for Cyprus. The guidance emphasizes vigilance due to escalating regional security risks and resultant travel disruptions, advising travelers to stay informed and consult the foreign travel advice website for the latest guidance.
