Girl Hospitalized After Ingesting Mother’s Weight Loss Injection

Date:

A young girl, aged seven, was rushed to the hospital after mistakenly ingesting her mother’s weight loss injection, thinking it would alleviate her stomach ache. The drug, known as GLP-1 or Ozempic, is commonly used for treating Type 1 diabetes and aiding in weight loss.

Jessa Milender, now eight years old, accidentally took 60 percent of a prefilled GLP-1 injector pen, which resulted in her being hospitalized and in a critical condition for several days. Thinking it was stomach medicine, Jessa shared that she believed the injection helped her mother with stomachaches.

Upon discovering her daughter’s ingestion, Melissa immediately contacted the poison center and took Jessa to the hospital, where she received intravenous treatment for symptoms of dehydration and vomiting.

GLP-1 functions by replicating the body’s natural hormone to suppress appetite and promote a feeling of fullness for longer durations. However, similar to any medication, it can lead to side effects such as vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.

Following Jessa’s recovery, Melissa took preventive measures to ensure such an incident would not reoccur, including storing the medication in a secure locked box. Despite the alarming ordeal, Jessa made a full recovery, prompting Melissa to express gratitude for divine protection.

In a separate incident, a 12-year-old boy required hospitalization after unintentionally consuming an excessive amount of caffeine from Tyson Fury’s chewing gum. Oliver Wood ingested over 2,000mg of caffeine, equivalent to 20 cups of coffee, causing chest pains and jitteriness, which led to his hospitalization and subsequent discharge.

While there are no specific laws prohibiting the sale of caffeine products to minors in the UK, the government has outlined plans to restrict the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to individuals under 16 years old. Oliver’s mother, Anne-Marie Willis, emphasized the need for regulation, highlighting the dangers associated with products containing high caffeine levels.
