Travel experts are cautioning that holiday costs may increase if the conflict in the Middle East persists. Due to the Foreign Office’s advice against non-essential travel to certain Middle Eastern countries and the subsequent flight cancellations, prices for alternative destinations could surge. The price of jet fuel in north-west Europe has already risen from $830 to $1,500 per tonne following the air strikes on Iran, potentially impacting holiday expenses.
Independent travel specialist Jane Hawkes explained that the conflict in the Middle East could elevate holiday prices globally due to increased fuel costs for airlines. Moreover, if travelers avoid unstable regions for safety reasons, the demand for safer destinations may rise, leading to higher prices for accommodations and flights.
Andrea Platania from Transfeero also highlighted that rerouting flights away from the Middle East could contribute to price hikes. Longer flight routes burn more fuel, and the escalating jet fuel costs are likely to be passed on to travelers through increased ticket prices. Additionally, the expenses for hotels, rental cars, and excursions may be affected by heightened demand and potential fuel cost increments.
According to the RAC, petrol prices have recently increased by 3p to 136p per liter, while diesel prices rose by 5p to 147p per liter. Ms. Platania emphasized that although ‘safe’ destinations have not experienced significant cost shifts yet, higher transportation expenses and cautious booking behaviors could lead to temporary price increases for accommodations and travel packages.
Richard Young, CEO of selfcatering.co.uk, suggested that the prices of staycations might also rise as travelers become more risk-averse amidst global uncertainty and soaring fuel costs. During such times, interest in self-catering breaks tends to increase, offering families a getaway option closer to home with more space and flexibility. Popular UK destinations like Yorkshire Dales, Norfolk, Northumberland, Devon, Cotswolds, Lake District, and Highland hotspots could witness a surge in visitors as people seek alternatives to overseas travel.
