JD.com Launches Joybuy in UK to Rival Amazon

Date:

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has introduced its new online platform, Joybuy, in the UK to compete with major players like Amazon. Valued at £30 billion, the platform offers a wide range of products including technology, appliances, beauty items, home essentials, and groceries, featuring popular brands such as Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal.

Joybuy is set to provide next-day delivery for orders over £29 in London and several other cities like Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, catering to around 17 million residents. Additionally, the platform offers a same-day “Double 11” delivery service for orders placed before 11 am, guaranteeing delivery by 11 pm. JD.com has established its own logistics network and will operate distribution centers in Milton Keynes and Luton.

The company’s expansion into the UK market follows its withdrawal from negotiations to acquire prominent British retail brands in recent years. JD.com had considered purchasing Currys in 2024 and explored a potential takeover of Argos from Sainsbury’s in September last year, but ultimately decided against it.

With long-term plans in the UK, JD.com aims to attract new customers with its diverse product offerings, competitive pricing, and convenient services. Matthew Nobbs, the managing director of Joybuy UK, expressed confidence in the company’s growth prospects, emphasizing the importance of ensuring an excellent customer experience.

In addition to the UK launch, JD.com is also entering the markets of Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The company sealed a 2.2 billion euro (£1.9 billion) deal to acquire the Germany-based electronics retail group Ceconomy last year.
