“Bingo Sees Resurgence with Attendance and Revenue Growth”

Date:

Bingo may be experiencing a resurgence as a major operator reported the first increase in both attendance and revenue in nearly two decades. Buzz Bingo, responsible for 77 clubs nationwide, saw a 2.5% growth in numbers last year, with a 5% surge in the latter half. This marks the first time since 2007 that both admissions and sales have seen an upturn.

Dominic Mansour, the company’s CEO, stated, “Bingo is enjoying a real resurgence across the UK.” The game, introduced from the US in the 1950s, gained popularity in the 1960s when numerous cinemas were transformed into bingo halls.

While bingo halls flourished in various locations, especially coastal areas, attendance began to decline in the 1980s, with the emergence of the National Lottery in 1994 posing a new challenge. To combat this trend, operators have introduced innovative technologies and transformed bingo nights into vibrant events, leading to speculations of a revival in recent years.

Despite reports of a surge in younger players, the number of bingo halls has decreased from 335 pre-pandemic to around 247 presently. The Bingo Association estimates that all clubs collectively generate around £35 million in annual profits, with a significant portion impacted by recent economic changes.

Buzz Bingo has seen a decline in site numbers from 137 before the pandemic, with admissions still below previous levels. Despite challenges, the company remains optimistic, attributing the recent success to technological advancements and club refurbishments. Clubs that underwent renovations observed a 20% rise in admissions and a 50% increase in new customers.

Looking ahead, Mr. Mansour anticipates even stronger growth in the coming years. He emphasized the importance of a stable regulatory environment to sustain this positive momentum. Research also suggests that bingo halls offer a hidden benefit by reducing feelings of loneliness among players, showcasing the social value of such establishments.
