A traveler was apprehended during a stroll while on vacation. Karl Adolf Amrhein, an American national, was taken into custody at 7:15 am on March 19 while walking with luggage along Jalan Raya Sukawati in Gianyar Regency, Bali, Indonesia, as stated by the local police. Pecalang officers on patrol in the area spotted the foreign visitor on foot. Superintendent Chandra Citra Kesuma, the Chief of Gianyar Sub-regional Police, mentioned that after initial attempts at communication failed, the individual was escorted to the Sukawati Police Station for clarification.
Reported by Antara News, the tourist confessed that he had walked from a villa in the Ubud region because his accommodation there had ended, and he had been unsuccessful in finding a driver to transport him to a new place. Upon acknowledging this, the Sukawati Police, with the assistance of the Pecalang of Sukawati Traditional Village, informed him that Bali was observing Nyepi, a day of silence with all activities suspended. Mr. Amrhein was informed that he could rest at the Sukawati Police Headquarters until the following day, but he requested accommodation at a holiday villa, which was granted.
During the Nyepi Day of Silence celebrations in Bali, a mandatory stay-at-home order is in effect, prohibiting all outdoor activities and public transportation. The festivities signify the beginning of the new year, with Balinese Hindus embracing silence instead of engaging in lively celebrations like in other cultures. From 6 am on March 11 until the same time the next day, adherents switch off electronic devices, fast, meditate, and stay indoors with their families. Special security personnel patrol the streets to ensure compliance with the restrictions.
Although only 8% of Bali’s population is not Hindu, the entire island observes the holiday, leading to deserted roads except for essential vehicles and the closure of tourist spots. Hotels refrain from checking guests in or out during this period. Chief Chandra emphasized the importance of international visitors respecting Balinese customs to uphold communal harmony during significant cultural events.
