Owning your first home can be a challenging goal, but one individual shared his strategy to secure £3,000 in free funds towards his deposit.
At 25, Arron Humberston utilized a Lifetime ISA to step onto the property ladder. A Lifetime ISA is a specialized savings tool tailored for first-time homebuyers or retirement planning.
With a Lifetime ISA, you can save up to £4,000 annually and receive a 25% bonus from the Government, potentially netting you up to £1,000 free each tax year.
However, the catch is that these savings must be used for buying your first home or for retirement purposes, with the property value not exceeding £450,000.
Any attempt to withdraw funds from your Lifetime ISA for non-authorized reasons incurs a 25% penalty charge, erasing both the bonus and part of your original savings.
Arron accumulated £13,000 in personal savings in his Lifetime ISA, which grew to £20,000 by the time he purchased his first home. He earned over £3,000 in Government bonuses and around £4,000 in investment returns due to his ISA being invested in stocks and shares.
Now settled in Leicester with his fiancée Shannon, their son Braylen, their dog Milo, and their newborn, Arlen, getting the keys to their new home last year was a significant milestone for the family.
Arron shared, “We acquired the property in March last year, and it still feels unbelievable to call it ours. It meets all our expectations with three bedrooms, a driveway, and a beautiful garden.”
Introduced to Lifetime ISAs at 18 through his stepfather’s advice, Arron found the 25% bonus to be a game-changer, making homeownership seem achievable.
By maximizing his contributions towards the £4,000 limit annually, Arron saw his account grow to over £20,000, giving him an additional £7,000 through bonuses and investment growth.
Opening his Lifetime ISA with OneFamily eight years ago, Arron highlighted other providers offering Lifetime ISAs such as Moneybox, Tembo, Plum, Bath Building Society, and Skipton Building Society, as major UK banks typically do not provide this service.
A revised version of the Lifetime ISA is slated for launch in April 2028, exclusively catering to first-time buyers for property purchases, discontinuing its use for retirement savings.
Details on potential adjustments to the house price threshold under the new Lifetime ISA version remain undisclosed, with a Government consultation planned following the Budget announcement last November.
