The latest data from the Home Office has unveiled the regions in England and Wales most affected by shoplifting incidents. A surge in shoplifting offenses has been observed nationwide following the pandemic and the ensuing cost of living crisis. Last year, police in England and Wales documented over 530,000 shoplifting crimes, marking a 19% increase from the previous year and setting a new record.
London saw the most significant spike, with shop theft rising by 53% to nearly 94,000 reported cases by the Metropolitan Police. Notably, Leeds city center topped the list with the highest number of shop theft reports in the 12 months up to October, surpassing all other areas in both countries.

The “Square Mile” City of London financial district rounded out the top five with 1,686 shoplifting offenses recorded.
