Allegations have been made against Donald Trump’s administration for neglecting its duties in the aftermath of a sewage leak in the United States.
Following one of the largest sewage spills in US history, raw waste overflowed into the Potomac River in Maryland, prompting criticism from opponents directed at the US President. Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s spokesperson, Ammar Moussa, accused the Trump administration of evading responsibility for the repair and cleanup efforts.
Moussa stated, “The President is misinformed once again. It seems the Trump administration failed to recognize its obligation in this situation. Over the past four weeks, they have neglected to take action, neglecting their responsibility and endangering public health.”
Although Trump criticized Governor Moore for a delayed response to the pipe rupture, the pipe in question, the Potomac Interceptor, falls under the jurisdiction of a District of Columbia-based water authority and the federal government, not the governor. Moussa promptly corrected Trump’s error and criticized the President for his statements.
The Potomac Interceptor, a pipe from the 1960s, is managed by DC Water, a federally regulated utility in Washington overseen by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Nevertheless, Trump expressed his concerns on social media, asserting that he would not allow local “incompetent leadership” to jeopardize the Potomac River. He claimed to have instructed federal authorities to lead the response efforts.
In a social media post, Trump further remarked, “There is an environmental catastrophe unfolding in the Potomac River due to the mismanagement of local democratic leaders, particularly Governor Wes Moore of Maryland.”
In response, Moussa, representing the governor, criticized EPA officials for not engaging in a recent legislative hearing on the cleanup and blamed Trump for failing to take responsibility.
Researchers at the University of Maryland confirmed that the sewage leak is among the largest in US history. The collapse of a 72-inch sewer pipe last month resulted in millions of gallons of wastewater spilling into the river.
David L. Gadis, CEO and general manager of DC Water, stated, “We have been collaborating with the US EPA since the Potomac Interceptor collapse.” DC Water officials mentioned during a public hearing that repairing the rupture could take several weeks and that permanent fixes to the damaged line might require months.
