Wes Streeting clarified that he did not go against Keir Starmer by making public his private WhatsApp conversations with Peter Mandelson. Instead, the Health Secretary emphasized that his decision stemmed from having “nothing to hide” amidst allegations regarding his ties to the Labour veteran.
Streeting stated, “I shared my messages because I believe in transparency. Following a weekend of baseless accusations, I felt it necessary to disclose them. I firmly believe that openness is the best policy, and now everyone can review the content.”
This development followed the government’s agreement to disclose numerous documents linked to Lord Mandelson’s appointment as the UK’s envoy to Washington, which encompassed WhatsApp exchanges between the peer and government officials.
In a significant move on Monday, Streeting unveiled a transcript of his conversations with Lord Mandelson to distance himself from the peer. In one exchange, Streeting expressed concerns to Mandelson about his re-election prospects in the Ilford North constituency, where he holds a slim majority of 528 votes.
Following a council by-election where Labour lost its secure ward in Ilford South to an independent candidate, Streeting expressed apprehension, stating, “I fear we are in serious trouble here, and my chances at the next election look bleak.” He also criticized the government’s lack of a growth strategy and condemned Israel’s actions as “war crimes.”
Despite Streeting’s actions, ministers were cautioned against following suit and releasing their private messages with Lord Mandelson, whose association with Jeffrey Epstein has caused turmoil within the government.
In a subsequent response, Keir Starmer stressed the need for a “controlled process” in releasing communications with the peer. He emphasized, “The handling of text messages and related information gathered from recent parliamentary actions must be methodical, both within the government and in collaboration with law enforcement.”
When questioned about addressing Streeting’s independent disclosure, Starmer highlighted the collective responsibility to coordinate actions, stating, “We must ensure a unified approach, as transparency is essential to Parliament. Collaboration with Parliament and law enforcement is crucial to executing this process correctly.”
